About Hayes Point - a Grade II* site

Hayes Point, previously known as 'Sully Hospital', has been described as "An outstanding example of inter-war architecture, which has survived almost unaltered". It is still considered to be the finest representation of one of the last great Modernist landmarks in the whole of Wales.

The building is protected by a Grade II star listing. The fine Art Deco external appearance has been carefully maintained and preserved. To ensure this the are also preservation orders on all the tree in the ancient forest that surrounds it, as well as in the beautiful grounds in which this very special building stands.

History (a brief chronology)

Hayes Point was built by the firm of William Pite, Son and Fairweather's, who won a open competition to design the building in 1931.The original purpose of the 'Sully Hospital' site, was as a Tuberculosis Hospital for King Edward VII Welsh National Memorial Association. It was opened in 1936 by Prince George, Duke of Kent. The building wide windows provided patients with sunlight, fresh air and views. It had a capacity of 250-300 residential patients. It included an indoor pool; administration block; nurses home for 134 nurses and maids; a morgue; medical superintendents house and a porter's lodge.

During WWII it served as a general chest and heart facility and even had its own maternity ward. A Battalion of American service men built many temporary huts in 1943 to expand the hospital to withstand the demands of wartime. Surgery was transferred to other hospitals in the area from the early 1970's. From 1993-2001, it served as a Psychiatric hospital before closing.

The site remained empty and became somewhat derelict until it was redeveloped as a "Prestige Development"  of 236 luxury apartments from 2001-2009 at an estimated development cost of around £25-30 million pounds.
